Just when I thought I had covered every single one of the fall 2026 fashion trends worth talking about, fashion month apparently said, not so fast.
If you read my original Fall 2026 Fashion Trends for Women Over 40 guide, you already know about the season’s rich jewel tones, faux fur, capes, skirt suits, dark romantic details, plaid, satin, chunky knits, suede boots, statement jewelry and all the other major trends making their way from the runway into real life.
So I’m not repeating any of those here.
Instead, consider this Part 2: the fall 2026 fashion trends that deserve their own conversation.
And some of these are actually the trends I find most interesting because they aren’t necessarily about buying an entirely new wardrobe. A different hemline, a belt, a scarf or a new way of layering clothes you already own can suddenly make an outfit look very 2026.
Vogue, Marie Claire, Who What Wear and InStyle have all continued to identify new themes as the season approaches, and the overriding message running through the fall 2026 fashion trends is becoming clear: this season is about personality, proportion and intentional styling just as much as it is about individual pieces.
Here are 10 more fall 2026 fashion trends worth knowing—and how I would actually wear them after 40.

1. The Drop Waist Is Back
I know.
Some of us hear “drop waist” and immediately picture either a 1920s flapper dress or something we wore several decades ago and weren’t necessarily hoping would return.
But the Fall 2026 version is surprisingly sophisticated.
Instead of defining the body at the natural waist, the visual waistline drops closer to the hips. Designers including Tory Burch, Marni and Chanel have all played with versions of the silhouette, and Marie Claire has singled it out as one of Fall 2026’s emerging trends.
And no—you do not need to buy a skin-tight dress with a seam running across the widest part of your hips.
What to Look For
Generally, the most wearable versions are:
- Drop-waist midi dresses
- Dresses with a longer torso and softly gathered skirt
- Low-slung pleated skirts
- Anything that uses a belt to visually lower the waist
- Long tunic-style tops over fluid skirts
Above all, the key word is soft. A rigid seam cutting straight across the hip can be difficult, though. Meanwhile, a slightly lowered waist with draping, pleating or movement is much easier to wear.
How I’d Wear It Over 40
Keep everything around it polished. Try a drop-waist midi dress with a sleek knee-high boot and structured bag, or wear a lower-slung midi skirt with a fitted knit tucked just enough to show the silhouette.
And if this trend does absolutely nothing for your body? Skip it. After all, there are approximately nine million other things we can wear this fall.
2. Peplums Are Quietly Returning
Here’s another one I did not expect to be discussing again so soon.
Peplums.
But before you pull out your 2012 going-out top, the Fall 2026 version is very different. The new peplum feels architectural rather than sweet. Designers are using sculpted seams, exaggerated hips and strategic volume to create an hourglass silhouette. In fact, InStyle identified dramatic peplums among the recurring themes across the Fall/Winter 2026 fashion-month collections.
Think less “ruffle sewn onto a blouse.” Picture, instead, beautiful tailoring that happens to create shape at the waist.
What to Look For
So the modern version includes:
- Peplum blazers
- Structured jackets with nipped waists
- Knit tops with subtle flare
- Asymmetrical peplum tops
- Button-front jackets that flare slightly over the hips
Notably, this is one of those trends where subtlety makes it look expensive.
Why I Like This One for Women Over 40
Because we’ve spent several seasons swimming in enormous blazers. I love an oversized jacket as much as anyone, but sometimes I would actually like people to know I have a waist.
A softly shaped peplum jacket over straight trousers or dark jeans gives you definition without requiring anything tight. So I’d keep the rest of the outfit simple: peplum jacket, straight-leg trousers, pointed shoe, great earrings. Done.

3. Fair Isle Sweaters Are Having a Fashion Moment
Certainly, this is the coziest trend in Part 2.
Fair Isle knitwear is back—and not simply as the Christmas sweater you pull out once every December. Marie Claire highlighted heritage knitwear and Fair Isle sweaters as one of the important stories coming out of the Fall 2026 collections. Furthermore, this season’s versions feel slightly rustic, slightly preppy and very expensive-looking when styled correctly.
What Makes a Fair Isle Sweater Look Current
Look for:
- Muted Nordic patterns
- Slightly oversized crewnecks
- Brushed wool textures
- Traditional cream, camel, gray and brown combinations
- Cropped Fair Isle cardigans
- Fair Isle sweater vests
But the styling matters more than the sweater itself. Instead of automatically pairing one with leggings and snow boots, try it with tailored trousers, a simple midi skirt, straight-leg jeans or a polished loafer. Ultimately, the contrast between heritage knit and refined bottom is what makes it feel modern.
Before You Buy One
Check your closet first. Seriously. If you’ve owned a beautiful Nordic sweater for 12 years, congratulations—fashion has returned to you.

4. The High-Low Hemline Is Making a Comeback
Remember high-low skirts? Shorter in front, longer in back. Yes, those.
But don’t panic—the dramatic waterfall hems of the 2010s aren’t exactly what we’re talking about. For Fall 2026, designers have been experimenting with uneven, asymmetrical and high-low hemlines that create movement rather than looking overtly trendy. In addition, InStyle called out the return of the high-low skirt across the Fall 2026 collections.
The Sophisticated Version
Look for skirts and dresses where the difference in length is subtle. For example: a midi skirt that curves slightly higher in front, an asymmetrical skirt that exposes one knee, a flowing dress with an uneven hem, or a wrap skirt where the overlap naturally creates different lengths. Those are far easier to wear than the dramatic “mini in front, maxi in back” dresses we remember.
Why It Works
Movement makes an outfit interesting without requiring pattern or embellishment. Wear an asymmetrical midi skirt with a fitted sweater and tall boots and you have an outfit that looks current without screaming, I’m wearing a trend. Which is usually exactly where I want to land.

5. Sporty Pieces Are Moving Into Everyday Wardrobes
Actually, this one has been building all year. Fashion continues to borrow from performance clothing—ski gear, track jackets, technical nylon, windbreakers and athletic separates—but designers are mixing those pieces with distinctly polished clothes. Marie Claire identified sport-inspired separates as part of the Fall 2026 runway story, while InStyle has tracked technical jackets moving well beyond their original athletic purpose.
But this does not mean we all need to start dressing like we’re headed to soccer practice. Rather, the interesting part is the juxtaposition. And if you love leaning all the way into the sporty-chic direction, my chic fall matching sets guide covers the best lounge and two-piece sets for fall 2026.
Try This Instead
- A sleek windbreaker with tailored pants
- Zip-front technical jackets worn with a midi skirt
- Sporty striped knits paired with beautiful trousers
- Quarter-zips layered underneath a polished coat
- Technical rain jackets with straight jeans and loafers
In short, it’s one sporty piece mixed into an otherwise grown-up outfit.
The Over-40 Rule I’d Use
Avoid making the entire outfit athletic unless you’re actually exercising. The magic happens when you combine categories: sporty jacket with tailored trousers, polished skirt with technical outerwear, or a track-inspired sweater with great jeans and loafers. Ultimately, that tension is what makes the outfit look intentional.

6. Silk Scarves Are Becoming a Major Styling Piece
This may be my favorite of all the fall 2026 fashion trends in this article, because many of us already own it.
Indeed, the silk scarf is back in a serious way. Vogue’s Pre-Fall 2026 accessory report calls the scarf one of the hardest-working accessories in the wardrobe, with designers including Chanel, Kallmeyer, Stella McCartney and Ferragamo styling scarves in multiple ways. And we’re not only talking about tying one neatly around your neck.
How Scarves Are Being Worn Now
Try one:
- Knotted close around your neck
- Loosely draped inside a blazer
- Wrapped over a turtleneck
- Tied around your waist
- Belted at the waist in place of leather
- Draped over one shoulder
- Attached to a handbag strap
- Worn over your hair
This is exactly the kind of trend I love because it can change the entire personality of clothes you already own. Black sweater + jeans? Add a beautifully printed silk scarf and suddenly you’ve done something.
Vintage Counts
Actually, vintage might be even better. Raid your mother’s closet, check an estate sale, or look at consignment stores. After all, a beautiful silk scarf doesn’t need to be new to look current.

7. Statement Belts Are Back
After years of relatively quiet belts, designers are drawing attention to the waist again. Vogue is highlighting tassel belts and decorative belt treatments for Pre-Fall 2026, while its Fall 2026 runway styling coverage also points to skinny belts being used strategically over separates. So we actually have two belt directions happening simultaneously.
Option One: The Skinny Belt
A narrow leather belt worn over a blazer, cardigan, sweater, dress or lightweight coat. It’s understated and very polished.
Option Two: The Statement Belt
This is where things get more interesting. Think:
- Tassels
- Oversized buckles
- Western-inspired hardware
- Sculptural closures
- Braided leather
- Chain details
Of course, you don’t need ten of these. In fact, one beautiful belt can update clothes you’ve owned for years.
How I’d Style It
Start with a column of simple clothing—a sweater and trousers, for example—and let the belt create the shape. It can also rescue oversized pieces. That slightly too-big blazer in your closet? Try belting it before you donate it.

8. Opera Gloves Are Not Just for Evening Anymore
This is one of Fall 2026’s more unexpected accessories. Long gloves—particularly opera-length and intentionally scrunched styles—appeared across the collections, and Vogue identified them as one of the standout accessories of the season. Still, the interesting part isn’t that opera gloves exist. It’s what designers are wearing them with. They’re showing up with denim, daytime dresses, tailored clothing and simple separates rather than being reserved exclusively for formal gowns.
How to Make This Wearable in Real Life
Admittedly, I’m probably not wearing elbow-length satin gloves to Costco. But a slightly longer leather or suede glove? Absolutely. Try:
- Long leather gloves with a three-quarter sleeve coat
- Burgundy gloves with a camel coat
- Chocolate gloves with cream outerwear
- Scrunched leather gloves with a simple dress
- A bold glove against an otherwise neutral outfit
It’s old-school glamour used in a much less precious way. And that is actually very chic.
Try the Long-Glove Trend
9. The Slouchy Bag Is the Counterpoint to All That Structure
Part 1 already covered the polished handbag trends of Fall 2026. But there is another bag movement happening simultaneously—and it is basically their complete opposite. Soft, slouchy bags are back. Specifically, Vogue’s current Pre-Fall accessory report highlights bags that combine softness with enough structure to work from office to weekend. Think less rigid handbag sitting perfectly upright on a shelf. Instead, picture beautiful leather that folds, puddles and molds against your body.
What to Look For
- Oversized shoulder bags
- Soft leather totes
- Relaxed, slouchy hobos
- Supple suede shoulder bags
- East-west bags with easy construction
- Clutch-like bags in a much larger scale
This is especially good news for those of us who actually carry things: phone, glasses, keys, wallet, lip gloss, hand sanitizer, receipts from three weeks ago and possibly snacks. Basically, we require infrastructure. And if you prefer something hands-free, I rounded up the best polished backpacks for women that look far more chic than anything you carried in college.
How to Keep It Looking Polished
Choose a beautiful material and restrained design. The bag can be relaxed without looking sloppy. For instance, soft chocolate leather, deep suede, black leather or a gorgeous neutral makes this trend look far more expensive than an overly decorated version.

10. Styling Is Becoming the Biggest Fall 2026 Fashion Trend
This final one may be the most important. Fall 2026 isn’t only about what you’re wearing. Increasingly, it’s about how you’re putting it together. Vogue’s Fall 2026 styling report highlighted ideas like half-tucked collars, backward shirts, leggings under skirts, layered vests, skinny belts and deliberately unexpected combinations. Meanwhile, Vogue’s Pre-Fall collections emphasize creative scarf styling, mixing masculine and feminine pieces and reworking familiar wardrobe staples rather than constantly replacing them.
And I think that matters. Because this is where fashion becomes personal style instead of shopping.
A Few Fall 2026 Styling Ideas to Try
- Button a white shirt differently.
- Add a skinny belt over your blazer.
- Wear a silk scarf with a sweater.
- Put a polished coat over something sporty.
- Pair a feminine skirt with a masculine shoe — my Fall 2026 shoe trends guide has every style worth knowing.
- Mix a fitted top with a dramatically fuller bottom.
- Combine an old-fashioned accessory with very simple modern clothing.
None of those requires replacing your wardrobe. Rather, they simply change the proportions or tension of what you’re already wearing. And that may be the most useful of all the fall 2026 fashion trends.
So, Which Fall 2026 Fashion Trends Should You Actually Buy?
Probably fewer than you think.
If you already bought—or already own—the major pieces from my original fall 2026 fashion trends guide, I would not go out and purchase ten more trends from this list. Instead, choose one clothing trend and one accessory or styling trend. For example:
- Fair Isle sweater + silk scarf
- Peplum jacket + statement belt
- Asymmetrical skirt + long leather gloves
- Nothing new + a completely different way of styling what you already own
That is enough. The goal isn’t to look like you purchased the Fall 2026 runway — rather, it’s to look like yourself, only current.
And one thing I especially appreciate about fashion right now is that there isn’t a single uniform we’re all supposed to adopt. Romantic clothing is happening alongside menswear. Meanwhile, sporty pieces are being mixed with polished ones. Waistlines are simultaneously dropping lower and being cinched more dramatically. Similarly, heritage knits coexist with futuristic technical fabrics. In other words, you can pick the part that works for you. Which is exactly how trends should work.
Which Fall 2026 Fashion Trends Would I Try First?
My vote? The scarf. It costs relatively little, you may already own one, and it can update a black sweater, white shirt, blazer, coat or simple dress in about 30 seconds.
After that, I love the return of shaped jackets and peplums because we’re finally seeing a little more definition after years of oversized everything. Fair Isle is another easy yes because it has longevity well beyond one season.
Meanwhile, the fall 2026 fashion trends I’d approach more carefully are the exaggerated drop waist and dramatic high-low hem. They’re interesting, but fit matters considerably more than whether they’re fashionable.
And that is always my rule with trends after 40: the trend has to work for you. Never the other way around.
If something makes you feel beautiful, modern and pulled together, wear it. But if it makes you spend 20 minutes tugging at yourself in the mirror? Fashion will provide another option approximately five minutes from now.
Happy fall shopping!
